Discovered Jazz and Swing in middle school and have been a fan ever since. Collecting 78s, which I started about 35 years ago, has helped me expand my musical horizon. One of my areas of interest is now also the "ethnic" or foreign-language music on shellac that Columbia, Victor, and many other labels produced for immigrants to the United States between the 1910s and 1950s.

xiphophilos 20 hours ago		78 RPM Celestin's Tuxedo Jazz Band - Oh Didn't He Ramble / High Society	The label is neat but I think the band is only an idealized depiction of a generic dixieland band. I don't know if clarinetist Alphone Picou ever wore his hair parted in the middle in 1920s fashion, but he certainly didn't in 1950 when this picture of the Papa Celestin Band was taken (Picou is on the very left, Celestin the trumpeter): https://digitallibrary.tulane.edu/islandora/object/tulane%3A21313
xiphophilos 25th Mar 2023		78 RPM Jimmie Davis - There's A New Moon Over My Shoulder / Love Please Don't Let Me Down	Cary Ginell's Decca Hillbilly discography, p. 311 gives the "release date" for this record as 12/19/1944. The problem with this and Ginell's other release dates is that they are not what we would conventionally call a release date. As Ginell explains on page 305: "In the Decca label copy books, one piece of information included on each page was a date. This date referred to that time when the information on that label was printed. In comparing this date with Decca advertisements showing new releases, it can be determined that the records were released within a month after the date shown on the label copy pages." So Ginell's dates really are label printing dates, not what we'd call release dates. Ginell seems right, though, in that we have to add about a month to get an approximate release date. At least that's what the listing of this record in Billboard seems to indicate: Billboard, January 20, 1945, pages 20 & 61: Popular Record Releases (from January 18 thru January 25). So I have replaced the release date Dec. 19, 1944 with Jan. 1945. Jan. 18 and Jan. 25, 1945 both were Thursdays, by the way. Do we know the day of the week when Decca would release its records?

xiphophilos 23rd Mar 2023		78 RPM Eileen Barton - As If I Didn't Have Enough On My Mind / One-zy Two-zy (I Love You-zy)	Thanks for uploading the music! The recordings are quite clear, but maybe you can get even better results out of the record if you rinse it in warm water and clean away the dust from the grooves with a microfiber cloth. I then dry the records with kitchen paper towels. It may not remove the slight pop (that seems to be a scratch), but maybe some of the crackling.
